Celebrate Earth Day!

earth day

Earth day is rapidly approaching gophers! The Office of Sustainability will be celebrating the day through fun, sustainable events all day along with campus student groups on Friday, April 20th. Check out our Facebook event page to see the full schedule!

Before celebrating with us at the Northrop Plaza and the West Bank Community Garden, read up on our past blogs about some ways that YOU can be sustainable in your daily life with the Small Steps Series. This series is a great guide for all individuals looking to adopt sustainable habits into their day-to-day schedules.

The 7 main areas to integrate sustainability are through:

  1. Energy Conservation

  • It’s easy to conserve energy! Turn off the lights when you leave a room, unplug your devices when not in use, and take the stairs instead of the elevator.

  • Waste Reduction

    • Reduce, reuse, recycle is the name of the game. You may hear this saying all the time –but do you know how to apply it to your habits?

  • Sustainability Education

    • Attention students! It’s easy and fun to get involved in sustainability on campus. Join a class, a club with a sustainability focus or check out one of their events.

  • Water Conservation

    • Saving and protecting water is simple as can be! Pick up your litter, shorten showers when possible, and avoid buying toxic materials that could end up in rivers and lakes.
  • Transportation

    • Summer is around the corner. What better way to enjoy the outdoors than by riding a bike or going for a walk? CO2-free transportation is an effective and fun way to reduce your carbon footprint.

  • Reusables

    • It’s easier than you think to ditch plastic bags, straws, and bottles – go reusable! Learn how reusables will benefit you and mother nature.

  • Food Systems

    • Commit to sustainable food systems. This is an effective way to eat clean, healthy food while supporting local economy and reducing carbon emissions.
