Over the last few years, the Office of Sustainability has been attending the University of Minnesota Farmer’s Market as an opportunity to reach out to the campus community and start a conversation about sustainable actions.
As in the past, the market takes place every Wednesday on the McNamara Plaza from 11 am – 2 pm. Our office sets up a table every week and uses this time as an opportunity to engage with those attending the market.
This year, the Office of Sustainability is partnering with the Recycling Program to discuss and spread awareness about the ongoing organics rollout initiative that is taking place on campus over the next two years. This program involves introducing organics bins to 180+ buildings on campus in order to divert as much organic material as possible from making its way into landfills. We want to spread this news to as many people in the campus community as possible!
At our booth, we have a waste sorting bean bag game in which the player tries to guess which waste stream an item belongs in. This game tests your knowledge of the quad system on campus and helps to clarify items that are often incorrectly sorted.
Through our time at the Farmer’s Market, we hope to inform and educate the campus community about the ongoing changes to the waste program, especially regarding the introduction of organics recycling. The Farmer’s Market takes place every Wednesday through October, so be sure to stop by and learn more!
Not on campus? You can still learn more about Organics Recycling on our blog!
