U Market Services, the department who manages the bulk of deliveries on campus, was recently honored for its sustainable delivery efforts. The national University Logistics and Supply Chain Association (ULSCA) presented the department with its 2018 Sustainability Award for its expanded application of Secondary Distribution Hubs.
The concept of a Secondary Distribution Hub is relatively simple. One of U Market Services trucks drops off a large number of packages at one building on campus. Here the packages are sorted and organized according to their destination. Then, instead of using a truck, these packages are delivered on foot via the Gopher Way to nearby, connected buildings.
U Market Services now operates three Secondary Distribution Hubs after opening one in the Mechanical Engineering Building in Fall 2017. In its first year, 15,000 packages were delivered from this location alone, which resulted in nearly 2,300 fewer truck moves in the most congested part of campus. It is estimated that this reduced the carbon footprint for these deliveries by 90%!
U Market Services continues to explore and plan other locations for Secondary Distributions Hubs to more sustainably deliver to the rest of the University.
